Keywords to look out for in Job Descriptions

Required – If you see this in the qualifications section it means that your application will not be considered if you do not meet the specific qualification. For example, an SHRM-CP Certification is required for the role. If you apply to the role without this certification, your application will not be considered.

Preferred – If you see this in the qualifications section this means that it’s a “nice to have” Your application may still be considered if you do not have the preferred qualification. However, if there are others who apply who do have this preferred qualification they will be considered for the role first. For example, Excel experience is preferred for the role.

Senior – If you do not see “Senior” in the title you are likely applying to an entry or mid-level role. There may be management positions that do not have the word Senior included. For example, Technology Manager is the title. This role is likely not a Senior Technology Manager role so if you’ve been in management for years and looking to advance your career the next step up would be “Senior.”

And – If you see this in the qualifications section it means that you need to have 2 of the 2 skills listed. Sometimes it’s more but for this case, we’ll go with 2. If you only have 1 of the skills and still applied to the role and did not hear back this is likely the reason.

Or – If you see this in the qualifications section it means that you need to have 1 of the 2 skills listed. If you have only 1 then it is okay for you to apply. However, please understand that people who have both skills will likely be considered first.

At Least / Minimum – If you see this in the qualifications section what’s listed is what’s needed. Anything less than that will likely not be acceptable and your application may not be considered. For example, a minimum of 6 years of experience is required for the role. If you apply to the job with 2, 3, 4 or 5 years then your application will likely be declined. Now there are cases where someone may be at 5 years so I would still encourage to apply if on the brink of 6 years.

Working on the other side I see so many people getting frustrated with not hearing back after so many submittals. It can become frustrating and take a hit on a person's self-esteem for sure but it doesn't have to. It's really about being strategic in the jobs you apply to. Sometimes there are exceptions to the rules and your application may make it through the cracks but it's rare, meaning you still need to make changes in order to be more effective in your job search.
