LET’S TALK ATS!

ATS aka Applicant Tracking Systems are used with many employers, more so mid-size to larger employers. What is the purpose of this system? Well, it helps Recruiters save time when it comes to screening resumes. For example, if 100 people apply for a job a Recruiter can filter the system and request cover letters and resumes with certain keywords to be sent to them first.

I’ve seen posts on social media of people complaining that there’s not really a shortage because they’ve submitted over 50 applications and no responses back from employers. In some of these cases, if documents are lacking certain keywords your application may never make it to the eyes of a Recruiter. If you’re taking time to apply and not getting responses my advice is to invest into a professional to help you in this area. However, this may not be the only reason why you are not getting responses back. A lack of technical skills, lack of experience in a new field, lack of education/training are other areas you need to consider when applying to jobs and if needed take time to get the training you need to become more marketable.

Job seekers tend to get discouraged and the lack of responses can take a hit on a person’s self-esteem. When updating resumes for my clients making it pass an ATS is my sole focus to ensure keywords and phrases are included to help with at least getting your resume to a human. To take it a step further, if you have not interviewed in some time and need to brush up on your skills definitely invest in a professional to help guide you through. I’m finding people are making it pass the ATS with their newly updated resumes and getting interviews, but this is where they fall off and back to square one. Lastly, if you are submitting applications online with a resume created through Indeed what I'm noticing is the the data within your document does not show up on certain systems, which means your application will be rejected due to improper submission.
