“The effectiveness of communication is not defined by the communication, but by the response." - Milton Erickson

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

Business and industry leaders are looking for specific skills from employees and having effective communication skills, both verbal and written are at the top of the list. Having superior communication skills is a key requirement listed on just about every job description for roles at any level. Employers don’t assume that everyone is good at communicating and test you from the time you put in the application. From your résumé to how you fill out the application, your written skills are being rated. Taking advantage of training in this area won’t only help you to better understand others but will lead to promotions.

PROFESSIONALISM, ETHICS & ETIQUETTE

Whether you're a CEO of a Fortune 500 company or a janitor at a school displaying professionalism in the workplace is a must. If professionalism doesn't come naturally to you or you weren't taught the "do's" and "don'ts" it can be learned and improved upon. A recent study of more than 600 human-resource professionals and supervisors found younger workers fail to exhibit professionalism on the job, which resulted in employees losing their jobs. Taking advantage of this type of training can ultimately lead to raises and promotions, chances to work on more projects, and lessens your chances of being cut when a company decides to downsize.

TIME & STRESS MANAGEMENT

Poor time management can lead to termination of employment, therefore, it’s crucial to learn the art of time management. Whether you're entering the workforce for the first time or have years of experience; completing assignments to the highest standards is a key determinant of career success. Also, stress management is just as important. If the warning signs of work stress go unattended, they often lead to much bigger problems, which in turn affects production and effectiveness at work. Chronic or intense stress can also lead to physical and emotional health problems. It’s good to stay up to date on training in this area, as new tools and techniques are implemented every few years.

The soft skills listed above are key when being sought out by employers. A combination of the above in addition to a good work ethic will lead you to raises, promotions, and open opportunities you didn't even consider. If you took advantage of similar courses in college; there's always room for improvement especially if you're looking to advance further in your career. It'll look great on your resume!
